A rare Chinese painted pottery figure of a foreign young man in dancing pose, with curly dark hair. Original red, black and green pigment remains throughout.
Oxford TL test certificate.
From a Parisian collection assembled in the 1960's and 1970's.

An almost identical figure is in the Metropolitan Museum, New York.
Another similar is in the Cernuschi Museum, Paris.
Another similar is illustrated in The Art of the Tang Potter, Mario Prodan, Thames and Hudson 1960, pl. 82, where it is described as 'Youth with Graeco-Roman features'.
A more likely theory is that these figures represent Polynesians who came to China as traders or entertainers.
